The Artist's Insanity.

If there is one important thing to know about me, it's that I hate bullshit in all of its forms.

One of the most spectacular pieces of bullshit is the idea of a positive correlation between creative proficiency and mental instability.

Now, I know that there are a certain number of rather legendary madmen who created a rather interesting amount of work. What everyone fails to realize here is that they account for an absolutely minimal portion of artists, over-all.

My main problem with the statement, commonly posited as "all artists are a little bit insane," is that by definition if you're insane, you're not functional.

Art actually -requires- a certain amount of lucidity, and a great amount of dedication and focus. If you disagree with this statement, I don't want to read anything you've written. Ever.

What this boils down to is the inherent attention seeking nature of the artist. You don't write/paint/sing NOT to share with other people. But what if your work isn't good enough to get attention? Or you just don't have the confidence to put it out there? Well, gaining sympathy through the use of feigned mental disorder works pretty good. Hell, you may even convince yourself its really there.

This only holds people back.

And it's too damn prevalent in the artistic community.

Get over yourselves.

You're not that special.
